Welcome to my marketing focused blog series, the clean Tusk!
“Everything in moderation” my teachers would say. In a world with so many screens and advertising platforms, too many ads are as harmful for a brand’s image as is invisibility. “Sales start decreasing after an ad reaches the same person 40 times within one month. Basically, enough is enough” according to The Advertising Research Foundation.
Today I examine the leading downfalls of over exposure and ways to mitigate these downfalls. I’m here to help you reach your targets without making your target audience run the other direction.
1. FRUSTRATION AND FATIGUE
Disadvantage: Consumers get tired of seeing the same ad repeatedly and this leads to a decrease in engagement and effectiveness of ad campaigns.
Mitigation: Ensure that there are differentiated creative ads for different market segments, a rotation of ad creatives in a content schedule is a healthy way to avoid viewer frustration.
2. SPAM LEADS TO MISTRUST
Disadvantage: “Desperate “or “aggressive”, these are the words viewers respond with when being over exposed to adverts from one brand. This leads to mistrust among potential customers and reduces the possibility of regaining that trust.
Mitigation: Ensure that there is a two-way engagement with consumers to build trust. Focus on authenticity and transparency in advertising campaigns.
3. BLOCKING AND REPORTING
Disadvantage: Repetitive and annoying ads lead consumers to use ad blockers, this reduces the visibility of digital ads, despite having access to the target market.
Mitigation: Provide engaging and value- driven content that encourages users to allow-list your site. Use in-app (native) advertising that provides a seamless and less intrusive experience.
4. BRAND MESSAGE DILUTION
Disadvantage: With too many ads, the core message of a brand can get lost, leading to confusion among consumers.
Mitigation: Maintain a consistent brand message across all advertising channels. Ensure there is an appropriate use of the brand’s vision, mission and values throughout ad assets.
5. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Disadvantage: Overproduction of physical advertisements, like billboards and flyers, are terrible for the environment and create waste.
Mitigation: Embrace sustainable advertising practices, try using recycled materials for tangible ads and focus more on creating engaging digital content.
6. COSTS & PAID TRAFFIC
Disadvantage: Relying too much on paid advertising can make a brand vulnerable to increased financial costs and to changes in a platform’s algorithm.
Mitigation: Diversify marketing strategies by investing in organic traffic sources, like search engine optimization (SEO) and organic social media engagement.
7. WEAKENED CONSUMER CHOICE
Disadvantage: Excessive advertising may overshadow other brands, reducing the choices available to consumers, this may increase consumer frustration.
Mitigation: Brands, especially dominant ones, should practice ethical advertising and avoid monopolistic practices. This ensures a level playing field for all businesses.
8. INCREASED PRODUCT COSTS
Disadvantage: The costs of extensive advertising campaigns can carry over into higher product prices.
Mitigation: Optimize advertising budgets and explore cost-effective marketing channels to ensure that product pricing remains competitive.
Summary
In summary, while advertising is essential for brand visibility, it’s crucial to strike a balance. Over-reliance on ads can be counterproductive. Instead, brands should focus on value-driven content and customer satisfying practices and attempt to genuinely connect with their audience.
